Les Voix des Fleuves / Crossing the Water
Awarded the Prix Jeune création Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes 2024, Amoxtli by Vir Andres Hera was presented as part of the 17th Lyon Biennale, within the exhibition Jeune création internationale at the Institut d’art contemporain, Villeurbanne/Rhône-Alpes (IAC).
For this edition of the Biennale, ten emerging artists, from the regional and the international scenes, were invited to conceive new in situ projects. Jeune création internationale is a collaborative program bringing together the Lyon Biennale, the Institut d’art contemporain, Villeurbanne/Rhône-Alpes, the Musée d’art contemporain de Lyon (macLYON), and a partner art school from Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes.
The artists presented at the IAC as part of Jeune création internationale – 17th Lyon Biennale were:
Hilary Galbreaith, Vir Andres Hera, Meri Karapetyan, Ines Katamso, Nadežda Kirćanski, Sahil Naik, Matthias Odin, Jennetta Petch & Szymon Kula, Shivay La Multiple, Anastasia Sosunova.
Within this framework, Vir Andres Hera presented Amoxtli (2024), an installation whose title refers to the Nahuatl word for “notebook” or “book,” and to the multilingual poetry of Sayat-Nova. The work is informed by the concept of nepantla, theorized by Gloria Anzaldúa as an interstitial space where identities remain in flux and open to transformation. Amoxtli unfolds through testimonies by LGBTQIA+ activists, artists, and technicians, articulated simultaneously in Spanish, French, and English. Translation and interpretation are integral to the installation, superimposing voices in order to multiply perspectives and resist singular narratives.
On 30 November 2024, Vir Andres Hera presented Amoxtli and its conceptual framework during a public encounter at the IAC, as part of the Biennale’s public program.
